48/12 V DC/DC conversion (Telecoms / Server)

Modern computing and telecommunication applications require high-power supplies to meet the demands placed upon them. 48V is an established and efficient power distribution architecture in telecom data centres for server applications. Using multiphase buck configuration enables 750 W to be achieved with two phases. However to support server applications and infrastructure, highly efficient 48/12 V DC/DC conversion is required.

Design considerations

  • Provide high power input to 12 V with Hot swap functionality
  • Avoid potential noise coupling signal integrity issue, which can be introduced by the 48 V rail running on motherboards
  • For board level reliability and best performance we recommend LFPAK56 and LFPAK88 devices
  • Better Rdson and body diode behaviour is important for efficiency and for conducted and radiated emissions
  • Provide adequate ESD protection to minimize potential of damage from transient voltages
