High-voltage Battery Management System (BMS)

As electric vehicles (EVs) evolve toward higher performance, longer range, and faster charging, the role of the Battery Management System (BMS) becomes increasingly critical. HV-BMS solutions (typically 400 / 800 V architectures) are at the heart of modern automotive electric powertrains, ensuring safe, efficient and intelligent energy management and are essential for unlocking the full potential of next-generation electric mobility.

Design considerations

  • Define clear safe operating limits for each cell and pack (voltage, current, temperature, SOC).
  • Design a contactor control for pre-charge and charge/discharge operations
  • Provide a reliable cell balancing strategy (active or passive), monitor the cells SOC and SOH for the expected lifetime
  • Choose an architecture that fits the pack size (modular, distributed or centralized).
  • Select components for high temperature capability, high current handling, low RDS(on), fast switching, and appropriate ESD/transient robustness.
  • Implement ESD protection to provide reliable communication with the ECU and between the modules if designing a wireless BMS.
