Low-voltage (< 48 V) bidirectional brushless DC

Low-voltage (< 48 V) bidirectional brushless DC (BLDC) motors are increasingly becoming the motor drive of choice across consumer, industrial and medical applications. Although they typically require more sophisticated drive circuitry, BLDC motors offer superior efficiency, higher power density, precise torque and speed control, regenerative braking and extended operational lifetime. The rapid growth of battery-powered cordless equipment, from power tools to robotic actuators, has further intensified demand for BLDC drives that maximise runtime efficiency while meeting tightening safety and EMC standards.

Design considerations

  • Trend is towards PWM driven bushless DC motor control
  • Motor drive MOSFETs must handle peak high-current demands with low RDS(on) and good thermal impedance
  • MOSFETs with strong linear mode performance may be required for reverse battery protection if overload conditions reduce battery and gate voltages
  • MOSFETs may need to meet specific spacing requirements like UL2595
