Low-voltage (< 48 V) unipolar stepper motor

Low-voltage (< 48 V) unipolar stepper motors are widely used in medical, robotic and consumer electronics applications. Valued for their simple single-direction winding topology and cost-effective drive circuitry. However, limited high-speed torque due to L/R time constants, winding resistance losses and mid-range resonance instability present real design challenges. Against this backdrop, modern systems increasingly demand arc-minute positional accuracy, consistent torque across a broad speed range and robust voltage transient immunity.

Design considerations

  • Tightening EMC requirements and the growth of battery-powered designs are driving demand for integrated driver ICs
  • Stall or start-up current can exceed full-load current, so drain-to-source surge current ratings must be sized accordingly
