Smart electricity meter - Residential

Traditional residential electricity meters, whether single-, split- or three-phase, were designed to accurately measure and record accumulated energy consumption (kWh). Today, the increasing deployment of rooftop solar systems, heat pumps, EV chargers and residential energy storage is driving the adoption of smart electricity meters capable of supporting bidirectional energy flows and advanced grid services. Design considerations

  • Accurate energy measurement is required for residential billing and bidirectional energy monitoring, supporting single-phase, split-phase and three-phase installations while maintaining revenue-grade performance across varying load conditions
  • Efficient power conversion and backup power management are needed to derive stable low-voltage rails from the mains supply, minimize energy losses and maintain critical functions such as event logging and last-gasp communication during outages
  • Robust protection and isolation safeguard metering, control and communication electronics from mains transients, surges, electrostatic discharge (ESD) and other fault conditions
  • Secure connectivity and data processing enable remote meter reading, firmware updates, load profiling, power quality monitoring and seamless integration into AMI networks
  • Support for distributed energy resources (DERs) enables monitoring and management of rooftop solar generation, residential battery storage, heat pumps and EV charging equipment while maintaining low power consumption and thermal efficiency.
